Importance of learning -In Singapore's Context

With the importance of the electronic space, information is transmitted at a very rapid pace .On top of that, new inventions and innovations in the electronic space are occurring concurrently.

No longer does business go through the traditional brick and mortar concept. In the past 2 years, e-commerce has been growing at an exponential rate internationally!

For a country to stay competitive, its people must be savvy enough to keep up with this new technology .In this new era, this lack of training indefinitely has negative impacts on Singapore economy.

According to Dr Lee Boon Yang (at the launch of the Singapore learning logo at the Bukit Merah Skills Development center on March 29, 2000)

“ Not since the industrial revolution has the world seen such massive changes taking place at such a rapid pace”

In a recent global survey conducted by Angus Reid, a Vancouver-based global market and social research company, Singapore is the second highest Internet user among developing countries and the 10th in the world list of Internet usage. In fact, it further concluded that every third adult Singaporean has access to the Net.

It is time to rethink alternatives to the so-called North American way, which sees that connecting to the Net through modem is the way the Web will continue to develop.

Thus 3 years is too long the transition between learning with skills being obsolete in a matter of months. Within months, you can see new upgraded versions of your web browsers, improved Internet connection speeds, new products in the market, thus the mindset of the aging population must change.
